2017 Mobil Tournament Report
This year’s tournament was threatened by forecasts of horrible weather, which unfortunately led a few people to scratch their name off the entry sheet. However, I am delighted to report that the day turned out to be sunny for the most part, with only a few sprinkles of rain catching a few of the tail enders.
The sun definitely shines on those that matter….golfers!!
We had 99 players competing in three divisions to get their hands on the great array of prizes that our tournament sponsors had generously provided. Along with our Major sponsor, John & Maureen Gifkins from the Mobil sites at Tahunanui and Stoke, we also had great support from Seifried Estate Wines, Hello World Nelson, Blueberry IT Nelson, and Shelley Carppe of Mike Pero Stoke. Thanks go to all of the sponsors for their generosity.
Young Josh Simpson went very close to winning the $5,000 of fuel vouchers for a hole in one at the tricky 17th, Josh’s tee shot caught a piece of the hole as it passed by, but unfortunately it didn’t make that crucial drop in to the hole. Unlucky Josh, better luck next time round!
With the majority of players in the men’s divisions, there were 11 prizes in each of those, so there were lots of happy players at the end of the day.
The main winners from each division were as follows:
Ladies Winner was Michelle Reardon with 34 points
2nd place went to Maree West on 33 points
3rd place went to Kathryn Maloney on 32 points and
4th place went to Lizzie Neale on 30 points.
Mens Division 1 was won by Nick Thomsen with 38 points
2nd place went to Blair Riordan on 38 points
3rd place went to Zane Lyttle on 37 points and
4th place went to Nathan Moore (Takaka) on 36 points.
Mens Division 2 was won by Dennis Andrews with 40 points
2nd place went to John Dallimore on 38 points
3rd place went to Mike Simpson on 37 points and
4th place went to John Fielding on 36 points.
Nearest the pin prizes went to the following:
3rd Maree West 6th John Dallimore 15th Ken Packer
As the day was about fun, we also had a lucky draw for 6 players to be chosen to compete in a bunker shootout – from the bunker behind the 18th green. The winner was whoever got closest to the pin from the bunker. There were groans of pain and suffering from the players selected from the lucky draw, as no-one relished being under the pressure of playing a bunker shot with the assembled crowd cheering on for the balcony above. So, the “lucky” players chosen were put in first name alphabetical order for the shootout:
Ash Bradley, Brent Williams, Brian Hogg, Daniel Endersby, Issac Wiffen and Steve Yates.
Ash played a wonderful shot that would have impressed even the television cameras, the rest of the players…..didn’t!! They were more like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Ah well, at least they all got a new ball for their efforts, and Ash won the fantastic prize of $200 of Mobil fuel vouchers for his shot of the day – Well done Ash!
I mentioned special offers, and we have two for you, here’s the first one.
John & Maureen Gifkins have given the members of Nelson Golf Club a great opportunity to win a $50 Mobil card every month till the end of the year.
All you have to do is visit their Mobil service stations in Tahunanui or Stoke, buy your fuel of anything else from these sites, then take your receipt into the golf club and put your name on the back of the receipt and put it into the lucky draw box in the golf office. You can do that from today, with the first draw being made on the first weekend in July. So, it’s easy – what are you waiting for??
And the second offer Seifried Wines….
Thanks for your support!!
Major Sponsor John Gifkins, from Mobil Tahunanui and Stoke, presenting the main prizes to the winners of each division:
NBS Open Tournament
2017 NBS Open Tournament Report
Saturday morning saw a keen group of competitors head out early to play in what proved to be the best of the day’s weather. By mid-day a hardy group of eager golfers followed them..a total of some 89 players participated in the field.
Competition was fierce with an eye firmly on a magnificent prize table, with the winners of the Gross prizes taking home Travel Vouchers from Hello World Nelson and some Seifried’s wine for their efforts. The Nett winners received a great selection of golf apparel along with other sponsor’s goodies as reward for their fine scoring.
The sky began to darken and by mid afternoon the rain clouds came down …but golfing spirits remained high.
At the close of play the adjectives of “drowned” and “rat” could be heard throughout the clubhouse, however that did little to dampen the laughter or expectations with one lady suspected of having the onset of trench foot! As the final results were being collated a random draw was held for 6 lucky golfers to once more don their raingear and head out to 18th green for the chance of winning a new NBS Target account complete with $250 for putting nearest the pin. The lucky players drawn out the hat were:
Bryan Hemi, Simon Parle, Maree West, Lizzie Neal, Andrew Simpson and Gary Spanger
They all had to choose from the putters and balls supplied from the Pro Shop…up stepped Bryan Hemi…his putt was a wee bit short…2nd up..Simon Parle (complete with crocs as footwear and a pink ball)…one squint down the line from Simon then bang off it trundled…right across the green and straight into the hole !!!! What a magnificent effort! The shoulders of the following 4 competitors took an almighty dip from beneath their brollies but all tried valiantly to match Simon’s feat but were sadly disappointed.
Peter Havill, the manager at NBS Nelson, thanked all the organisers and competitors for such an excellent event and said how proud he was to have been involved with the sponsorship relationship that NBS has enjoyed with Nelson Golf Club over the years.
Special thanks go to Euan Milne for an excellent job who stepped in on the day as tournament director in Derek Drysdale’s absence. He was very ably assisted by a super efficient Sue Schofield in compiling the results. Thanks also go to Glyn for setting up the prize table, Brendan’s green keeping team, Nick for overseeing the putting comp and The 19th Bar & Cafe for all their efforts on the day.
Lastly, thanks go to all the competitors who enjoyed the day and supported our Club and generous sponsors…

Fidelity Life Open Cup
The 2016 Fidelity Life Open was a huge success with a full field enjoying the breezy conditions on a wonderfully prepared golf course.
Nelson Golf Club has suffered over the years from some less than perfect fairways, but a recent deep seed sowing project has had some amazing results and the course is in its best condition for some time. Superintendant Brendon O’Hara and his team were congratulated by all the participants on their fine work in the preparation of the course.
Fidelity Life have been long supporters of this tournament and it has become a real “must play” tournament in the region. The prize table is second to none for a one day event and they are to be congratulated for their fine sponsorship of this fantastic golf day.
The winner of the tournament was Nelson club member Mathew Oldridge, who was a very late entry, when Mathew came down to the club only to practice, he was told that there had been a late call off – so he did the decent thing, paid his entry fee and filled the space on the start sheet. A great decision, as he took away the fabulous Fidelity Life Cup trophy along with a Taylor Made M2 driver, worth a cool $720…nice work Mathew!
Plus4 Insurance Solutions sponsored a Hole in One prize of a brand new Toyota car supplied by Bowater Motors at the 17th hole. However, no-one was able to find that Ace in the Hole and walk away with the big prize. As a consolation though, 6 players that were nearest to the pin on the 17th went into a shoot out on the 18th hole. In front of a packed balcony, the pressure was on the get closest to the pin from the 90 mtr marker. Club Champion Sam Nicholls showed his class and won the shoot out claiming a wonderful prize of a Taylor Made M2 fairway club.
Other results were as follows:
Korrin Black 35 points c/b

The promised rain failed to appear and everyone enjoyed the conditions in this better ball format.
