RESULTS FROM OLD HICKORY - THURSDAY 4 FEBRUARY:
The following report was received from Ken Howden (Convenor, Nelson Old Hickory Team)
"On Thursday 4th at the Kina Cliffs course we enjoyed a good day, the course was in good condition and the weather was very hot so all you had to do was tee off then walk along the bottom of the hills as that is where most balls finished as it was so dry.
The results were favourable as we were tied for second with Totradale just behind Tasman.
Congratulations to Lawrie Currie who top scored with 44 points thereby securing his place in the team. Our esteemed gentleman and former Convenor, Hugh Gourdie, came in with 40 points, next was Jim Hall on 31, Nev Manins on 30, Stan Barnes on 29 and myself on 27. Fortunately we have some good replacements for the bottom two, so look for some new names next month. We wish Robin Knight a speedy recovery when he gets his new hip. Till next month good golfing. Ken."

BUNKER RAKING:
Members may have noticed our Course Superintendent operating a bright and shiney bunker rake in our bunkers over the last week or so. The reconditioned Toro bunker rake machine was purchased with a very generous donation received from Bryan Skeggs. The machine can groom 85% of our bunkers within one hour which saves 2 man hours versus manual raking. Our intention is to machine rake the bunkers 3 times a week which will improve the condition of the sand in the bunkers considerably. In fact, the depth of soft sand has already increased markedly and it is NOW VERY IMPORTANT FOR ALL PLAYERS TO RAKE BUNKERS AFTER USE as foot imprints are now a lot deeper in the softer sand.

FIREWOOD GATHERING - EVERY MONDAY UNTIL THE END OF MARCH:
Members are invited to gather firewood from the slash pile adjacent to the #2 green every Monday through until the end of March. The Grounds Staff will pull out logs and lay them out beside the slash pile for members to cut up from 9.00am on Mondays. Members MUST HAVE SIGNED A CONDITIONS OF ENTRY FORM AND HAVE ALL THE REQUIRED SAFETY GEAR. Please call at the office to sign the reqired form.

MESSAGE FROM CLUB CAPTAIN ON PACE OF PLAY:
The following message has been received from Bill Rooney (Club Captain) regarding recent complaints about the slow pace of play.
"Whilst the introduction of 8 minute tee off intervals have been a success in aiding pace of play, of late unfortunately there appears to be some instances of slow play.
Where it is a competition including players form other clubs, our members can advise acceptable pace of play on our course. Here are some general pointers we should all be aware of :

Ensure that you are ready 10mins prior to your allotted start time (i.e. have scorecard, sanbucket, pitch repairer, tees, balls, pen etc)

All divots should be replaced or sand filled and pitch marks on greens repaired in normal pace of play. Do it while your partners are playing.

If you hit into the rough, get a line on it and all players should watch it. Play a provisional, it's a lot quicker than walking back (plus they always go straight for some reason).

Sort out the order of play smartly so you can all get ready for your next shot (select club and start pre shot routine) knowing when it's your shot.

When you arrive at the green leave your bag/trundler round the side toward the next tee.

When putting, finish putting out where possible to save time.

Mark the card at the next tee. If it's your honour hit your tee shot then mark the card.

Keep up with the group on front, not clear of the group behind. Walking briskly is good for you.

If your group is holding up the field, let the group behind through. In general the lowest handicapper in the group is expected to make the call/take responsiblity for the pace of the group.

On our course 4 balls are expected to complete their round within 4 hours."

GIVEWAY TO GROUNDS STAFF:
A reminder to members that BY LAW #19 states clearly that "ALL PLAYERS MUST GIVE WAY TO THE GREEN KEEPING STAFF AT ALL TIMES". There have been recent incidents of members hitting over grounds staff who have been working on fairways and greens. This is an offence for which members can be suspended.

NEW COURSE RECORD - SEAN RIORDAN - SUNDAY 7 FEBRUARY:
Congratulations to Sean Riordan of the Takaka Club (although he is a Social Member of Nelson) on setting a new course record of 63 for playing the course off the Blue Tees.
Sean, playing off a handicap of +3, shot his 8 under par round for a nett 66 !!! On the front nine he shot 5 birdies and 4 pars for 31, while on the back nine he scored 3 more birdies and 6 pars for 32. Incredible!!!

TRUNDLER HANDLES IN TRUNDLER STORAGE SHED:
Could members using the trundler storage shed please ensure that their trundler handle is collapsed or folded away so that there is sufficient space for other users to negotiate a pathway to/from the door. If all users show some consideration for the needs of others, the use of this facility will improve.

Happy Golfing
