NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 12 MARCH 2010
MEN'S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES:
Men's captain Owen Kirker reports:-
Entries for the men's club championships total a very healthy 153. There are six grades with 22 or 23 players in each grade. Both the Founder's Cup for 24 plus handicappers and Seniors' event for over 70s have attracted eight entries each.
This Saturday is the first Qualifying Round for all grades so there will be a capacity field with play off both No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The second round of the Encounter Shield will be played in conjunction with the qualifying round.
The second Qualifying Round will be played on Saturday, March 27. The best round counts. The best 16 rounds in each grade go forward to match play. The Founders and Seniors fields also play qualifying rounds for seeding purposes.
PLAYED HIS AGE:
Congratulations to BRUCE STEVENS who on Tuesday March 9 shot his age - 70. Bruce, a former New Zealand amateur champion, now playing on a five handicap, played the first nine in par and the second nine one under.
McQUADE MUG WINNER:
BRENDON JEFFERY is the first holder of the McQuade Mug this year after his plus four round in last Saturday's single par round. He won it by lot from Andrew Gourdie and Sydney Lo who also had plus four rounds. So, if you find Brendon standing beside you in the 19th with an empty pewter mug - you have been honoured with the opportunity to fill it up.

We lost two of the three foursomes matches in the morning but recovered very well to win all six singles matches in the afternoon. We won 14 points out of 18 and sit in second place to Greenacres. ACHESON CUP DEFENSE - MONDAY 15 MARCH:
A team from our Women's section will defend the ACHESON CUP against a Takaka team on Monday 15 March. This will be our fourth defence of this challenge trophy so good luck ladies.
CHANGE TO LOCAL RULE 3 - PROTECTION OF YOUNG TREES IDENTIFIED BY A STAKE:
There has been a change to LOCAL RULE 3 relating to TREES. Yesterday, all young trees on the course requiring protection, were marked with natural coloured stakes. This includes the area to the left of #4 green in front of #5 tee which was planted last year with manuka trees and has now been ringed with stakes.
Local Rule 3 has now been replaced by the following new rule:-
PROTECTION OF YOUNG TREES IDENTIFIED BY A STAKE - If such a tree interferes with a players stance or the area of intended swing, the ball MUST be lifted, without penalty and dropped within ONE club-length of the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole.
( NOTE if your ball is within the manuka area, the point of nearest relief will most likely be still within the area encircled by stakes)
ADDITIONAL GROUND UNDER REPAIR AREAS:
The new waste area being constructed on the right side of the #4 hole is classed as GUR with a compulsorary free drop within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief. It is expected that construction of this area will be completed within the next fortnight at which stage the GUR status will be uplifted and the area will come into play.
The new mounding being constructed on the left side of the #14 green is classed as GUR with a compulsorary free drop within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.
