NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 26 MARCH 2010

REPORT ON QUEENSTOWN GOLFING TRIP - 11-16 MARCH 2010:

Owen Kirker (retired editor of The Leader) has supplied the following report on the recent golf trip by 20 members to Queenstown organised by Ken Allan.

"Twenty tired but happy golfers piled into their team bus on Tuesday, March 16 in Queenstown to catch their flights back to Nelson after five days filled with golf and social activity.

The golfing tour, organised by Nelson club professional Ken Allan, began the previous Thursday when we flew into a chilly Queenstown and headed to Millbrook to take on the original front nine and the just opened alternative second nine. All played, few conquered but agreed it was a good start. Then it was off to the Pepper apartments on Wakatipu lakeside, five minutes walk from where all the Queenstown action takes place. The apartments, spacious with greatviews over the lake, were one of the features that made the tour such a success. Another feature was the intermingling of all party members who visited each other's apartments, depending on certain attractions - such as the bottle of fine rum which went to the winner of each day's closest to the pin tee shot. The bottle was on most occasions empty by the end of the night.

Arrowtown, with its narrow, rock lined fairways and small greens, challenged the group on Friday. Most took Saturday off from golf to enjoy the pleasues of the town although six hardy souls with money to spare took on Michael Hill's course, named appropriately The Hills. The team dinner saw a 100% attendance with many making return visits to the two casinos.

On Sunday the Queenstown Golf Club's Kelvin Heights course tested the group.

On Monday the group clambered into the bus for what was the highlight of the tour - a round at the new course of Jack's Point. After a cold start on Friday (snow fell on the hills on Thursday night) the weather had slowly improved to the point we had mild temperatures and a gentle westerly breeze to accompany us around scenically splendid Jack's Point. Carts are compulsory on this huge course. There's no out of bounds. But straying off the fairways can be painful as well as costly in strokes with matagouri competing with tough tussock. But good shot placement (as always) made this a golfing experience to remember. Lunch in the clubhouse consisted of food Nelson's top restaurants woluld be proud of. That night final visits to the casinos to try to recoup losses or improve gains were made. Many thanks were made to Ken for a well organised tour with great memories.

Overall golfing winners were Lindsay Rosser 1, Ken Allan 2, Jim Hall 3 and Bryan Chapman 4 among the men, and Rosie Ross 1, Lorraine Allen 2 and Pam Chapman 3 among the women."
