NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 23 APRIL 2010

RESULT OF ACHESON CUP DEFENSE - WEDNESDAY 21 APRIL:

Nelson repulsed the challenge from Golden Downs and sucessfully defended the Acheson Cup for a SIXTH TIME!

Our team comprising Melva Webby, Rosie Ross, Maureen Thomson, Rae McQuade, Barbara Thelin and Margaret Newton all played well for a very meritorious 6 - 0 win. Well done girls - you are on a roll!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARGO LUKES FOR A WIN AT THE ALLAN SCOTT GOLF TOURNAMENT - TUESDAY 20 APRIL:

Margo Lukes, our Women's Secretary, had a tournament to remember over in Marlborough this week when she scored 40 stableford points for second place in the individual round on the first day and then teamed up the next day with Cherry Wilson from Marlborough Golf Club to shoot a best ball net of 61 to win the competition by one stroke from five other combinations. Well done Margo and good luck with trying to keep your purple patch running!

TAYLORMADE AND NELSON CONTRACTING CONTINUE TO SPONSOR "BEAT THE PROS" - FIRST ROUND SATURDAY 24 APRIL:

Taylormade and Nelson Contracting have both confirmed that they will again jointly sponsor our "Beat the Pros" competition this year. This best ball stableford competition is open to men's and mixed pairs and is played over 5 Saturdays between now and October. The best 2 scores per pair count and the prize for the best two pairs is a trip to Christchurch to play rounds of golf at two top clubs competing against the sponsors and the Pros.

Members should note that the Men's Committee have switched the second round of Beat the Pros, scheduled for 8 May, to SATURDAY 29 MAY. The 8th May clashes with the Golden Bay Open in which the Pros are competing. The Multiplication Stableford scheduled for 29 May will now be played on 8 May.

ANZAC DAY - SUNDAY 25 APRIL:

The course will be open on ANZAC DAY but the Pro-Shop and The 19th will be CLOSED FOR THE MORNING.

NINE HOLE WOMEN'S OPEN TOURNAMENT - FRIDAY 30 APRIL:

Nelson is holding a 9 Hole Open Stableford Tournament on Friday 30 April. The field will be split into two divisions based on handicap, and there will be a two tee start from 9.04am .

BRIDGESTONE GOLF BALL FITTING CHALLENGE - SATURDAY 1 MAY:

Choosing the right golf ball for your game can make a dramatic difference in your performance on the golf course. Bridgestone Golf invite you to take the "Bridgestone Golf Challenge" and discover the best ball that fits you.

A Bridgestone Challenge technician uses the Science Eye launch monitor to analyse launch data and recommend a proper fitting ball. Optimising the 3 key factors of launch conditions (back spin, ball speed & launch angle) will maximise your distance!

Make a booking time between 9.00am and 3.00pm on Saturday 1 May at the Pro-Shop now!!

SUNDAY BEGINNER SESSIONS RECOMMENCE - SUNDAY 2 MAY:

The beginner coaching sessions will recommence after the holiday break on Sunday 2 May. Sessions are from 9.30am to 10.30am and cost $2 per child. Please note that there will NOT be any session this Sunday - ANZAC DAY .

ANYBODY GOT AN OLD STOVE?

Jamie Morris is after a second hand oven for our Clubhouse kitchen. Any member who has an old oven / and or stove, please contact Jamie at the Clubhouse (548 5029).

RESULTS OF SURVEY ON FOURBALL TOURNAMENT:

The Club's Captains have identified areas where change is required after this week's Captains' Committee considered the feedback from members in the survey conducted over the annual four-ball two-day tournament. There was not a large response from members - 35 replies were received. But there were areas in which a large proportion of the respondents agreed upon.

Thirty thought the two-day format was good.

Nineteen wanted the event split into men' and women's sections, 14 were happy with the existing arrangement. Other suggestions were more divisions, one main prize, then prizes for men and women.

While 28 were happy with the $40 entry fee, five thought it was too much and two wanted members to pay less than non-members.

Fourteen wanted prizes other than golf gear, mainly vouchers and three of this goup thought there were not enough prizes. Twelve thought existing prizes were fine and others had no comment.

Twenty-eight respondents were happy with the timing of the event while others said it clashed with other events or was at the wrong time of the year.

Sixteen did not want a dinner associated with the event. Five wanted a dinner. One wanted a calcutta reintroduced.

Of the respondents 14 played in this year's event and 21 did not. Those who did not gave a variety of reasons, including clashing with other events, not playing well enough, and not being able to compete with high handicappers, low handicappers and men (the last a woman's response).

Among the suggestions made were to not provide food and lower the entry fee, a one-tee start, nine-hole event, more promotion, and a committee to organise the whole event.

The captains agreed an organising committee will be set up. Particular areas that will be looked at are splitting the event into men's, women's and mixed divisions, possibly one main prize and prizes in the separate divisions and what the actual prizes will be, promotion and provision of food in the 19th.

TEE BOOKING RESPONSIBILITIES:

Members are reminded that they have a responsibility to cancel their golf booking if they cannot fill their booking slot. This can be easily done via computer except on the day of play in which you must ring the Pro-Shop and inform them that you will not be playing.

It is essential that members honour this responsibility - it is a basic courtesy and shows some consideration to fellow members. Many mornings are fully booked and it becomes very difficult, especially for new members, to find a spot, yet is extremely frustrating when they see threesomes and twosomes playing. The Pro-Shop MUST BE INFORMED when a tee booking is not being filled. It then gives them a chance to fill that spot with people who may be wanting a game. BOGUS BOOKINGS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE!

NEW MEMBERS DAY - SUNDAY 2 MAY :

An afternoon will be held for members who have joined the Club over the last 4 months on Sunday 2 May at 1.30pm.

The purpose of the afternoon is for new members to meet officials of the Club, ask questions, meet other new members, find out how sections of the Club operate, become more familiar with club facilities, play a few holes of golf and have a complimentary drink afterward. Email invitations will be sent to all new members but any members that feel they would gain from attending the function are warmly invited to participate.

PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB ENTITLED TO ONE COMLIMENTARY ROUND:

Members are reminded that prospective new members of the Club are entitled to a complimentary round of golf on our course in order to evaluate the Club. We want new members to join the Club and encourage members to bring friends down to the Club.

Current members should realise that their guests (either affiliated or non affiliated) can play with them for a $30 green fee.

REMINDER ABOUT FIREWOOD GATHERING:

Members who have the required chainsaw & safety equipment are reminded that they can gather firewood for FREE from the slash pile beside #2 green. This slash pile is out of the area of play so we are now allowing members to source this firewood on any day of the week as long as they have signed a form regarding conditions of access which are available at the office.

CLUB JERSEYS HAVE ARRIVED:

The Club jerseys and vests have now arrived and members who have ordered pre-sales should call at the office to pay and collect the jerseys they ordered.

FOCUS GROUP FUND RAISER:

The following is an email message I received today from a Claire Levy

"I work for an advertising agency in Christchurch. I need the services of a group of 8 people just above the age of 60. We pay quite well for these Focus Groups and if you are interested in participating please email me back-I am contacting a few golf clubs in the Nelson Area so the first one that indicates interest gets the job -this time.

I need 8 people 4 men + 4 women all who have bought prescription glasses in the last 2-3 years.
The meeting can be held in your clubrooms and I will come to that location the meeting will take around 60 to 90 minutes -are usually a lot of fun. I am not selling anything I just want the opinions of the people who come.

Regards
Claire"

Any 60+ members who meet the criteria and are interested, please contact the office and we will see if we can assemble a focus group to raise some funds for the Club.

Happy Golfing

Peter Hay
Manager
