NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 21 MAY 2010
NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 21 MAY 2010
POSTPONMENT OF CROMBIE LOCKWOOD STABLEFORD:
Although the heavy rain last weekend was most welcome for the course, it did disrupt our programme a little. The shotgun start Crombie Lockwood Stableford has now been postponed until SATURDAY 21 AUGUST. It will be a 12 noon shotgun start the same as was scheduled for last Saturday.
MEMBERS INFORMATION MEETING ON THE COURSE REDEVELOPMENT - NOW SATURDAY 22 MAY:
The INFORMATION MEETING FOR MEMBERS that was to be held last Saturday will now be held AT 5.15pm ON SATURDAY 22 MAY.
All members are invited to attend this meeting at which details of the approved redevelopment work for the next 8 months will be discussed as well as an outline the the work proposed for the year following.
The Club has been fortunate to secure a $10,000 grant from the Canterbury Community Trust to assist with course redevelopment costs and the Committee will report on how this will be spent most cost effectively.
RESULTS OF WOMEN'S DISTRICT OPEN DAY TOURNAMENT - THURSDAY 20 MAY:
Our Women's section hosted a very successful District Open Day Tournament at our course on Thursday 20 May. The field of 84 players enjoyed some beautiful autumn weather and a course in excellent condition after the recent heavy rain. The winning team, with a 4 person aggregate of 122 stableford points, came from our Club and comprised Elenor Hufflett, Lorraine Allen, Kay Duncan and Kath Thomson. Other Nelson Club members who featured in the prize list were Pat Ineson (closest to pin), Maureen Gibson (closest to pin) and Helen Howie (highest stableford for Bronze 3).
PLACING RULE NOW REPLACED WITH MARK,CLEAN & DROP:
The fairways have now recovered well from the slicing carried out on Monday and have dried out following the recent rain. The Grounds Committee have reviewed the temporary placing rule applied on Monday and from tomorrow SATURDAY 22 MAY, PLACING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED BUT PLAYERS MAY CHOOSE TO MARK, CLEAN AND DROP THEIR BALL OWN THEIR OWN FAIRWAY, WITHIN ONE CLUB LENGTH NO CLOSER TO THE HOLE. Again this is a temporary local rule and will be reviewed next week as conditions change.
The reason for the imposition of the Mark, Clean and Drop rule is that the wet weather has induced a lot of worm activity that has generated a significant amount of mud on the fairways. The overcast conditions of today have not allowed this mud to dry and with the forecast for similar conditions over the weekend, it was decided that it would be fairer for players to have the choice for a Mark, Clean and Drop during the Semi-Finals and Finals of the Men's Club Championships.
NEW MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE OFFER DURING MAY & JUNE FOR ALL MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES:
In an effort to attract new members to the Club, the Board has approved an offer of "TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE" memberships over all categories for the May-June period. If you know of anyone thinking of joining a golf club, now is the time for them to act!! If they can team up with another person (don't have to be the same gender - could be mother & son even) then they can obtain membership for half price.
FINALS OF THE MEN'S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS - SUNDAY 23 MAY:
The course will be closed to casual play until 1.00pm on Sunday 23 May while the finals of the Men's Club Championships are conducted. All matchplay will be played in twosomes with the 36 hole matches starting from 8.30am.
Those fortunate enough to win through to the FINALS ON SUNDAY 23 MAY, should try to arrange a caddie for their final matches. The more people we have on the course for the finals the better the atmosphere!! Prizegiving will be held in the Clubhouse at the conclusion of the matches at approximately 4.30pm.
BEAT THE PROS ROUND #2 - SATURDAY 29 MAY:
The second round of the popular Taylormade/Nelson Contracting Beat the Pros competition is on Saturday, 29 May . With the Pros coming in with 36 points in round one of this best-ball stableford event, quite a few pairs were able to win themselves a golf ball.
GOLFER PACIFIC BEST BALL CHALLENGE - SUNDAY 30 MAY:
The Captains Committee have decided to add a new event to our programme by holding a CLUB QUALIFYING EVENT OF THE GOLFER PACIFIC BEST BALL CHALLENGE ON SUNDAY 30 MAY. This is a Best Ball Stableford competition for pairs. The entry fee is $30 per player of which $10 goes to the Club. All players receive 3 Taylor Made "burner" golf balls, some gift vouchers and a free entry into a $325,000 major prize draw. There will be a shotgun start at 12 noon. ENTRY FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE PRO-SHOP AND OFFICE .
For every 25 pairs entered, one pair qualifies for a regional final. A National Final will be held 24-30 October at the Radisson Resort on the Gold Coast.
ENTRIES CLOSE FOR MEN'S STABLEFORD CUP - MONDAY 7 JUNE:
Entries close for the STABLEFORD CUP on MONDAY 7 JUNE. Please put your names up on the sheet in the Men's Change Rooms.
This is a pairs event where you can choose your own partner. Individual entries will also be accepted and will be paired up by the Men's Committee.
The competition is an aggregate of Best Ball Stableford scores over two rounds played on SATURDAY 12 JUNE and SATURDAY 9 JULY. Please note the different date for the second round to that which appears in the programme. The reason for this change is that the COSTELLO SHIELD (Presidents vs Captains) will now be played for on SATURDAY 26 JUNE .
REMINDER ABOUT FIREWOOD GATHERING:
Members who have the required chainsaw & safety equipment are reminded that they can gather firewood for FREE from the slash pile beside #2 green. This slash pile is out of the area of play so we are now allowing members to source this firewood on any day of the week as long as they have signed a form regarding conditions of access which are available at the office.
PRO-SHOP SPECIALS:
Attached please find a flyer from our Pro-Shop advertising some golf club specials and also a 3DAY SHORT GAME SCHOOL to be held on 16-18 JUNE from 12.30pm to 4.00pm each day.
