RESULTS OF THE GOLFER PACIFIC BEST BALL TOURNAMENT - SUNDAY 30 MAY: This inaugrual Best Ball Stableford tournament sponsored by the Golfer Pacific magazine was held in glorious weather on Sunday afternoon. The field of 35 pairs enjoyed the conditions and recorded some good scores. A family pair from our Club will go forward to the regional final of the Golfer Pacific Best Ball Challenge as Kelvin Gardiner and grandson Gordon Douglas won the Nelson Qualifying Tournament with a score of 47 points. This was 2 points clear of the runners up Derrick Gould (Nelson) and Kevin Sowman (Nelson) who scored 45 points. Third place on 44 points went to Vaughan Borcovsky (Nelson) & Mark Pascoe (Greenacres) on countback from Kevin Armstrong (Nelson) & Brendon Jeffrey (Nelson) and Craig Thomson (Nelson) & Eric Brown (Nelson). RESULT OF WESTRUPP TROPHY - SUNDAY 30 MAY: Our women's team lost to Greenacres in the crunch matchup at Motueka on Sunday. We therefore lose this trophy to Greenacres after holding it for the last 5 years. This is the first time Greenacres have won the Westrupp Trophy since 2000. RESULT OF OLD HICKORY - THURSDAY 3 JUNE: Hot off the press! Our team could not repeat the giddy success of last month at Totaradale today and finised third equal. They scored 132 points which was the same as the home club but some ways behind the winners MOTUEKA on 146 points and Takaka on 141 points. The convenor will have some head scratching to do in order to justify his place next month after only mustering 25 points! MOBIL QUEENS BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENT - MONDAY 7 JUNE: Members are reminded that the tournament on Queens Birthday sponsored by MOBIL STOKE & TAHUNANUI will be the same format as the successful event held last year. ie. Assemble at 10.30am for a 11.00am SHOTGUN START. The competition will be a TEAM BEST BALL NET. Men's, Women's and Mixed Teams are eligible to enter. You may enter your own 4 person team or put in a single entry and be allocated to a team. A start sheet is available in the Pro-Shop for entries. This best ball stableford event is held over two rounds of 18 holes each. The first round is on Saturday, June 12 and the second on Saturday, July 10. The pair with the highest best ball stableford points over the two rounds is the winner. The entry sheet, as usual is on the notice board in the men's changing room. Choose your own partners. MEN'S CAPTAIN'S COMMENT: On Saturday, June 19 the third round of the Nelson Contracting / Taylormade Beat the Pros competition will be held. This is followed on Saturday, June 26 with the President's versus the Captain's teams event for the COSTELLO SHIELD. This is a match play event with a shot gun start. On the day get a card printed out, take it upstairs where a shuffle draw will be organised and find out what team you will be playing for - the President's or the Captain's. After completion of matches the President's shout will occur. Nine Hole members will be able to participate in this Club event, either by playing 18 holes or if 2 or 4 of them team up to squeeze into the field at 2.00pm and play 9 holes . Bunker Plea!!!! Men's committee members are receiving complaints about bunkers not being raked during play. All club members will be aware of how important it is to rake bunkers after playing out of them, especially in their now fluffy state, so don't hold back if you see a player not doing the job. REPAIR OF PITCH MARKS AND DIVOTS: Members are reminded that with the softer ground conditions it is most important to REPAIR ALL PITCH MARKS & DIVOTS. The grounds staff have just installed sand bucket holders at the #2 and #11 tees for those players that forgot to get a sand bucket before they started. There is now no excuse for members not to carry and use a sand bucket!! Placing (15cm no closer to the hole on own fairway) is still allowed. MOUNDS ON #2 HOLE IN PLAY FROM SATURDAY 5 JUNE: Members are advised that from this SATURDAY 5 JUNE, the new mounds alongside #2 hole are now in play (ie. PLAY THE BALL AS IT LIES). The only exceptions to this are the final quarter of the mounding on the left side between the two blue topped stakes and the small area painted out at the bottom of the new mound on the right side close to the #2 green. These areas are still classed as GUR and players have the OPTION OF A FREE DROP WITHIN ONE CLUB-LENGTH OF AND NOT NEARER THE HOLE THAN THE NEAREST POINT OF RELIEF. NEW EXIT FROM #2 GREEN: The new exit pathway from #2 green is now available for use and members are encouraged to use it in preference to the old exit which will eventually be mounded over. NEW MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE OFFER DURING JUNE FOR ALL MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES: In an effort to attract new members to the Club, the Board has approved an offer of "TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE" memberships over all categories for the May-June period. If you know of anyone thinking of joining a golf club, now is the time for them to act!! If they can team up with another person (don't have to be the same gender - could be mother & son even) then they can obtain membership for half price. JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFYING ROUND - SUNDAY 4 JULY: Advance notice is given that the QUALIFYING ROUND FOR THE JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held on SUNDAY 4 JULY , the first Sunday of the School Holidays. The Roy Mace Salver, Max Warren Trophy and Jan Fellows Salver are all at stake on this round which will tee off from 10.30am. Please register your entry at the office. ON-COURSE GARDENS BEING REJUVINATED: This winter the gardens on-course are going to be rejuvinated with new plantings in keeping with the course redevelopment as a links course. Some preparatory work will be taking place over the next two weeks. PROCESSING OF PARTIALLY PLAYED 18 HOLE ROUNDS: With the recent spell of inclement weather, some members who have taken out an 18 hole card are only completing 9 holes. When this happens you should NOT process your score via the DIY computer system by entering 0 for all unplayed holes, but put your card in the handicap card box opposite the Pro-Shop for the office to process. The 9 hole score will count toward your handicap once married up with another 9 hole score you record within 12 months. You must play at least 13 holes for an 18 hole round to be recorded with each unplayed hole being scored as the equivalent of 2 stableford points. REMINDER ABOUT FIREWOOD GATHERING: Members who have the required chainsaw & safety equipment are reminded that they can gather firewood for FREE from the slash pile beside #2 green. This slash pile is out of the area of play so we are now allowing members to source this firewood on any day of the week as long as they have signed a form regarding conditions of access which are available at the office. Great to see the sun shining at long last!! Peter Hay Manager
