NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 8 JULY 2010
NELSON GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - 8 JULY 2010
MARKETING PLAN:
My last email Newsletter evidently exceeded capacity by one sentence so I have included a repeat of the last item of that Newsletter for those members that did not receive it in full.
At the last meeting of the Board of Directors it was decided that the Club required a Marketing Plan in order that we had a structured approach to presenting the Club to the outside world, to recruit and retain members, to attract more green fee paying visitors, to attrract more corporate events and to host National events. Any members who have marketing expertise that are able to help in this endeavour, please contact the Manager at the office on 548 5029. Your assistance would be much appreciated.
RESULTS OF OLD HICKORY TOURNAMENT - THURSDAY 1 JULY:
Ken Howden (Convenor of our Old Hickory Team) has supplied the following report:-
"It was a glorious day at Takaka on Thursday - the sun shone and the course was in good condition for this time of the year. Once again Motueka ranout the winners over the home team. Some interesting facts show that since 1992, Motueka has won the trophy 45 times, Waahi Taakaro 36, Greenacres 35, Nelson 29, Tasman 25, Totaradale 15 & Takaka 13. The next challenge is at Greenacres on the 5th August. Oh yes, our top scorer was Jim Hall on 33 followed by Russell Bailie & Hugh Gourdie on 28; the rest will be replaced!!"
EAGLES GALORE ON THURSDAY 1 JULY:
Last Thursday there was a somewhat freakish occurance on the course involving players in the same regular Thursday Group. Harry Day had an eagle on #11 but had his bragging rights shattered when Bob Shore also shot an eagle on #1 after they had started on hole #10. Good shooting lads!!
MEN'S CAPTAINS REPORT:
Stableford Cup:
The winners of the men's Stableford Cup competition for 2010 will be found on Saturday when the second and final round is played.
Leading the field after the first round in this best ball stableford competition are Alistair Papps and Johnny Corby with 46 points. Then comes Adrian Terry and Lin Booth on 43 and Richard and Daniel Grimes on 42. Then there are three players on 41 and six on 40. Scoring has been difficult so a two-round total of around 90 could be a winning one.
Captain's Trophy:
Last Saturday the 64 players to go through to match play in the Captain's Trophy were found after a net medal round. Qualifying scores ranged from Pat Sanderson's 72 to the 87s of Dave Farnsworth and Bryce Currie. The draw for the first round of matchplay on Saturday, July 17 will be published on Thursday, July 15. Players who have difficulty playing matches at the drawn times should consult page 8 of the club 2010 programme booklet and contact either myself or the club office. Players who lose their first round of match play go into the Presidents Plate competition, the first round of which is on Saturday, July 24 along with the second round of the Captain's Trophy.
RESULTS OF JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPS QUALIFYING ROUND - SUNDAY 4 JULY:
Bryan Donnelly (Acting Junior Convenor) has provided the following report:-
We were down on numbers, but the Juniors had a good day for their annual Club Champs and Trophy Day. What is noticible is the support and encouragement given to our Juniors by parents and Grand parents.
Results were as follows:-
Max Warren Trophy : Best Gross Nick Astwood 76 Gross
Runner Up Nick Loach 78 Gross
Roy Mace Salver: Best Net Joel Harden 68 Net
Runner Up Nick Astwood 69 Net
Jan Fellowes Salver: Best Net Junior Girls Xaviar Laurie 73 Net
9 Hole Competition: Winner Conner Winter 58
The Juniors will now enter into the matchplay phase of their trophy events. The Frank Ammundsen Trophy will be off the stick whereas the John Ross Trophy will be off handicap.
IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW COURSE RATING & STROKE HOLE ALLOCATIONS - THURSDAY 8 JULY:
Members will notice that the new course ratings and stroke hole allocations have been introduced today. With a significant change in the Men's slope numbers, many male members with mid range handicaps will have had their handicaps lowered overnight as their handicap index was related to the new course slope numbers. If these members continue to score as they have done, they will find that their handicap will gradually go out, depending on how often they play. Once they have played 20 or more rounds under the new slope number, they should notice a diffence in the conversion of their handicap index to course handicap when they play at other courses.
With the Yellow course (Par 72) now being rated at 73.5 and the White course (Par 71) now being rated at 70.5, in all MIXED competitions, except stableford, where the women play off the yellow tees and the men off the white tees, the women should adjust their course handicap by an ADDITIONAL 3 STROKES. In MIXED STABLEFORD competitions, the women should adjust their course handicap by an ADDITIONAL 2 STROKES.
SURVEY OF MEN'S GOLF PREFERENCES:
Every male golfer can recall someone saying, ``why don't we play more off the blue tees'' or, ``what idiot made us play off the blue tee tees in the freezing cold and mud of mid-winter.'' Or ``we play too many stableford rounds,'' or, ``we never play an ambrose or American foursome.''
The Men's Committee, instead of reacting to this sort of anecdotal evidence, have decided to seek from members information about why they play golf, what games they prefer and what they think of the programme that is currently offered.
``The committee wants to ensure with some certainty that they are providing what members want,'' says Men's Captain Owen Kirker.
To this end the Committee is sending out tomorrow via email a questionnaire for male members of the Club to fill in and return to the office by Friday, July 30. Hard copies of the questionnaires will also be available at the office.
Owen says such surveys are only of use if there is a good response and to encourage replies, each completed and returned questionnaire will go in a draw for a Stay and Play voucher worth $250 for a night's accommodation for two and a round of golf each at a choice of eight New Zealand destinations.

NEW BUNKERS ON HOLE #4:
Members will have noticed that our Grounds Staff have completed construction of the two revetted bunkers on the left side of the gap on the fouth hole. These bunkers will remain as GUR for a further 2 weeks whilst they consolidate, but the surrounding area is now back in play.
The turf for revetting these bunkers was taken from the #15 fairway which is now all GUR until the couch grass regenerates in Spring/Summer. A strip of fairway has been left down the right hand side of this fairway where players may take a free drop no closer to the hole.
PHYLLIS ADDIS:
Many members may recall Phyllis Addis, a long time member of the Club who died this week aged 99, only two months short of her 100th birthday. She only resigned from the Nelson Golf Club in 2005 when aged 94 years. From her example we obviously all have plenty of golfing ahead of us!
Happy Golfing
