Mens Division 1 : Nick Thomsen
REPORT ON THE 2017 MOBIL TOURNAMENT
This year’s tournament was threatened by forecasts of horrible weather, which unfortunately led a few people to scratch their name off the entry sheet. However, I am delighted to report that the day turned out to be sunny for the most part, with only a few sprinkles of rain catching a few of the tail enders.
The sun definitely shines on those that matter….golfers!!
We had 99 players competing in three divisions to get their hands on the great array of prizes that our tournament sponsors had generously provided. Along with our Major sponsor, John & Maureen Gifkins from the Mobil sites at Tahunanui and Stoke, we also had great support from Seifried Estate Wines, Hello World Nelson, Blueberry IT Nelson, and Shelley Carppe of Mike Pero Stoke. Thanks go to all of the sponsors for their generosity.
Young Josh Simpson went very close to winning the $5,000 of fuel vouchers for a hole in one at the tricky 17th, Josh’s tee shot caught a piece of the hole as it passed by, but unfortunately it didn’t make that crucial drop in to the hole. Unlucky Josh, better luck next time round!
With the majority of players in the men’s divisions, there were 11 prizes in each of those, so there were lots of happy players at the end of the day.
The main winners from each division were as follows:
Ladies Winner was Michelle Reardon with 34 points
2nd place went to Maree West on 33 points
3rd place went to Kathryn Maloney on 32 points and
4th place went to Lizzie Neale on 30 points.
Mens Division 1 was won by Nick Thomsen with 38 points
2nd place went to Blair Riordan on 38 points
3rd place went to Zane Lyttle on 37 points and
4th place went to Nathan Moore (Takaka) on 36 points.
Mens Division 2 was won by Dennis Andrews with 40 points
2nd place went to John Dallimore on 38 points
3rd place went to Mike Simpson on 37 points and
4th place went to John Fielding on 36 points.
Nearest the pin prizes went to the following:
3rd Maree West 6th John Dallimore 15th Ken Packer
As the day was about fun, we also had a lucky draw for 6 players to be chosen to compete in a bunker shootout – from the bunker behind the 18th green. The winner was whoever got closest to the pin from the bunker. There were groans of pain and suffering from the players selected from the lucky draw, as no-one relished being under the pressure of playing a bunker shot with the assembled crowd cheering on for the balcony above. So, the “lucky” players chosen were put in first name alphabetical order for the shootout:
Ash Bradley, Brent Williams, Brian Hogg, Daniel Endersby, Issac Wiffen and Steve Yates.
Ash played a wonderful shot that would have impressed even the television cameras, the rest of the players…..didn’t!! They were more like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Ah well, at least they all got a new ball for their efforts, and Ash won the fantastic prize of $200 of Mobil fuel vouchers for his shot of the day – Well done Ash!
I mentioned special offers, and we have two for you, here’s the first one.
John & Maureen Gifkins have given the members of Nelson Golf Club a great opportunity to win a $50 Mobil card every month till the end of the year.
All you have to do is visit their Mobil service stations in Tahunanui or Stoke, buy your fuel of anything else from these sites, then take your receipt into the golf club and put your name on the back of the receipt and put it into the lucky draw box in the golf office. You can do that from today, with the first draw being made on the first weekend in July. So, it’s easy – what are you waiting for??
