Women’s Golf Updates

Once again I was overwhelmed with the numbers for LGU on Tuesday!!! I think at the last count we had 74 women golfers playing in that south-westerly.

Everyone who played on Tuesday deserves a medal!

As I was inside the warm club rooms on Tuesday, I was able to observe the movement of the large field. I was very impressed with how everyone was moving along very efficiently. I believe most groups finished their LGU rounds in less than four hours!!! Thank you to players who kept up with the group in front of them and a big thank you to the Committee members who did such a great job with the draw!!

The qualifying round for the Carey Cup has been completed. The 16 players with the lowest nett scores have been put into the draw for Round 1 next Tuesday. The draw is done and posted on the board in The Hub. Your tee time will be emailed to you.

Congratulations to those successful 16 and thank you to those who were not successful but entered the competition.

The Ladies have had huge fields on Ladies day with over 70 in the field most Tuesdays. 9 Hole Ladies have had close to 30 players in their competitions. Lets Play Nine has been very successful with great fields playing on a Sunday.

The Bottle toppers have had large groups playing on a Wednesday, around a mostly full field.

The Thursday / Tuesday boys have had huge fields with close on 40 players on some days. The FRIGGS has also had a great following post lock down on a Friday. We now have a 9 hole men’s convener, so keep an eye out for this group. Its great that the weather has been quite kind to us, and a lot of golf being played. LETS PLAY NINE

We are about to start this LETS PLAY NINE group again.

With Saturday being such a busy club day, and the frost policy in place, it is too difficult to have a nine hole start on Saturdays.

So, we are going to try a Sunday Competition.

This coming Sunday, June 14th we have some tee times booked from 10.02am.

Any member wishing to join in for a nine hole competition at this time please report at the Pro Shop by 9.45am.

This group is open to 9 and 18 hole players, men, women and juniors, and those new to the game.

We usually put $2 in kitty and have a stableford competition with balls for prizes.

If we can get a regular group going we may be able to incorporate some varied competitions and trophies.

All matches in the second round of the Top gun competition need to be played by Saturday 11 July.

As this is a mixed event and under the new World Handicapping System mixed matches will play their matches as a Stableford compitition.

Matches that are Men vs Men or Women vs Women will continue to play these matches as a normal match play event (lowest handicap goes back to 0 and shorts sorted from there.)

For mixed matches Women vs Men: Both will play off their club handicap (no extra shots) and the winner of the hole is determined by the Stableford points scored on there respective cards. For the purposes of this competition you could win the hole with a negative Stableford point as long as yours was less then the other players negative. i.e. if you get 4 for 2 and 6 for no points you would get 7 for -1 and 8 for -2

Mixed Vets Report

Nelson Mixed Vets held their monthly Open tournament, sponsored by Guyton’s Seafood, on Monday 8th June, their first in three months following the Covid-19 lockdown. 64 hardy golfers braved the cold and windy conditions and, after a mostly calm Autumn, many found it a tough way to get back into golf after the long break.

Stephen Graham (Nelson) easily won the Best Gross with a fine 83 from Bob Schmuke(Nelson) and on a difficult day for scoring Conal Atkins (Nelson) recorded the only two to scoop the pot (18 balls). In the Mens division Bill Agnew (Motueka,36 pts) won from Keith Siebert (Nelson, 34) and Jack Denton (Waahi Taakaro, 32) while in the Womens division Grace Latimer (Motueka) won from Korrin Black (Nelson) and Jan Willcocks (Greenacres) on a countback, all three scoring 28 points.

The Nelson Nines mixed competition, sponsored by Steve Kelso of Sotheby’s International Realty, was won by Michael Sheehy (Nelson, 16 pts) from Bobbie Minchin (Nelson, 15) and Fay Murray (Greenacres, 13 on a countback).

Nearest the pins were won by Elton Netto (Totaradale) and Lian Wilson (Totaradale) with Eric Satherley(Tasman) taking out the straightest drive. In a keen contest for Country Rover Phillip Sellers (Waahi Taakaro) edged out a number of contenders for the Total Golf lesson voucher.

Full results are attached.

Ladies 9 Hole Golf Updates

Finally we have been able to restart our Golf year.

About 70 women, 9 and 18 holers, played a Waltz Stableford competition on Tuesday. Everyone was enjoying themselves. It was good to see so many players upstairs enjoying lunch.

Monique, Tracey and Rebecca, were very busy in the cafe, handling so many orders well. Great work.

The 9th of June is an LGU Day. We will tee off in handicap order this time. PLEASE BOOK BY SUNDAY NIGHT THE 7TH. You will receive your tee time on Monday the 8th. Starter Marjan, please come into the Hub to enter the 3’s.

There is sign up sheet on the notice board for the Committee Cup. This played on the 16th and 23rd of June. Choose your own partner. Best ball stableford. Please put your name down on Tuesday! Ring me if you want to play and can’t make this Tuesday.

The sign up sheet for the Carey Cup will be on the noticeboard from Tuesday. This is match-play on handicap. Qualifying round is on 7 July. Round 1 is played on 14 July and round 2 on 21 July. Remainder played in your own time before 31 August 2020.

We can hand in our (best) stableford cards for the Postal Stableford competition. Please put them in the red letterbox in the Hub. You need at least 4 cards. This competition closes at the end of August. You can hand in cards from any game or any club in the District you have played at in this period.

The new Dotgolf App is very easy to use, please download and have a go. You can use it as you play to record your score and that of your Marker. You do need to check-in at Pro Shop or via the app and a card number will be allocated to you which will show up on your app. I find it easier to have a card printed and enter the score after you have played and checked with the Marker if all scores are correct. You fill in your own card, no swapping then enter the scores on your

phone. Less risk of contamination. You need to know the membership number of your Marker and note this on your card. You can, of course, still enter your card manually. Looking forward to an uninterrupted remainder of the golf season.

As promised this week my segment will more be about the course and the great work that Greg and his team has been doing on the course in the last few months.

Bunkers: During lock down the team put over 75 trailer loads of sand into our bunkers. (I certainly tried quite a few of them last week)

Tees: New tee boxes are coming on really well 14 is already in play and is one of our best tee boxes on the course. 10, both Black and Blue tees will hopefully be live in late September early October. 6 tee box is coming on well and will hopefully be in play by the end of the year. 17, the black tee and the reshaping of the tee box is slightly ahead of the Blue and Red tees, we are hoping that both will be in play before the end of the year.

Greens: The team are working on these and have a goal of having them running at 10.5 on the Stimpmetre, with the new roller arriving later this month this should make a huge difference both in time and the quality of the course.

The Dam: The club has made a saving of over $90,000 in town water fees that we paid last year, so the project is certainly paying dividend for the club.

We are seeking a convener for the 9 hole men’s competitions, please contact the office for further details on this fantastic role.

Allow to display images We would like to say a big thank you to Andrew Simpson who as many of you may have seen has done a great job clearing and repainting the trundler room. We could not have done this without Andrew’s efforts. Also thanks should go to all volunteers who gave their time to help with player check-in procedures during Level 3, once again this was a big help for the club.

Ladies Golf Updates

Newsletter 19th May

I hope all of you are enjoying your golf. With weather like we have been having, what’s not to enjoy. Our Committee met Tuesday and had a good discussion about the revised programme. Next Tuesday there will not be any organized competition.

If you wish to play you need to put your name down or ring the pro shop and ask them to book you into dot golf.  If you don’t do so early enough, you may not get a game. The frost policy is in place and as a result you will notice that bookings are only available off the first tee. This is to ensure that if there is a frost, the tenth tee can be used instead.

The following week, 2nd June starts our new revised golf programme with a Total Golf day. The Committee has decided that we will play a Waltz Stableford combining the 9 & 18 hole players playing 14 holes. It should be fun so make sure you put your name down for playing on 2nd June to ensure you are included in the draw.

The Club Captain, Men’s and Women’s Captains, 9 Hole Convenor, Vets Convenor, Sean, David and the new Manager, Tony met via Zoom to discuss moving forward with golf at NGC. Tony informed us that the cabinet where the handicapping information has been displayed is to be used to post the new revised programme. The newsletter will also be posted there. With the new world handicapping system in place, handicaps change daily, so there is no need to post the handicaps any longer. Euan discussed the possibility of using an online entry form for all competitions.  He suggested that there could be a link put into the newsletter and people could register their intention to enter competition via the link. Sign up sheets would still be used in The Hub. Sean explained that during L2 it is not possible to do multi-tee starts. He also said at this point in time, the booking system will be for a seven day period.

Up Coming Events

2nd June : Total Golf

9th June : LGU 3, E&R 2, Grandmothers 2 & Field Salver 2, Shootout 3

11th June : Motueka District Open Day

Enjoy your golf, every time your play.

9 hole women’s newsletter 21 May 2020

Hi all

Life is still not back to normal. Unfortunately I have a few more changes to report. This might be ongoing as we travel down the Covid-19 levels (up or down). We are still not able to organise a golf morning for all women on Tuesday the 26th of May. Please book online again and play with the people in your time slot. We are planning to start our women’s golf again on 2 June. This will now be a Total Golf Day playing a Waltz competition. Please book on line by Sunday evening and the draw will be done on Monday. The previously announced Marwick Goblet has been postponed to 11 August due to the nature of the competition as you would be sharing a ball which is not allowed just yet.

There is a sign-up sheet for the Committee Cup on the notice board. This competition is planned for the 16th and 23rd of June. Choose your own partner. Best ball stableford.

The revised program should be available soon. Copies will be put on the Notice Boards around the Club and be available on line.So far we have 3 casualties: the Jill Heath Trophy, the Mabin Salver and the Sue Bunt.

The new Dotgolf App is very easy to use, please download and have a go.You can use it as you play to record your score and that of your

Marker. You do need to check-in at Pro Shop or via the app and a card number will be allocated to you which will show up on your app.

I find it easier to have a card printed and enter the score after you have played and checked with the Marker if all scores are correct.

You fill in your own card, no swapping then enter the scores on your phone. Less risk of contamination. You need to know the membership number of your Marker and note this on your card. You can, of course, still enter your card manually.

I will keep you all informed as much as I can.

Be Safe,Be Kind,Be Responsible

Allow to display images Thanks to everyone…

It is with much sadness that I write my last message in the weekly newsletter. Unfortunately from a family perspective COVID-19 put paid to our move to the area. We were hoping to have been fully settled in the region by now however I’m now preparing for the journey back north, and starting a new role in Auckland.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Derek, Rebecca and the Board for their support. I hope that people can understand my decision. Having spent the week working with Tony I know that the club is in good hands and there is a very capable team in place to support the club moving forwards. I would also like to thank all of the staff for their help and support through this difficult time and wish everyone at the club all the best for the future.
