Spark NZ Open -November 2024
![]() |
Saturday saw the first Spark NZ Open played. This newly sponsored event was sponsored by Shane McKay from Spark Business Hub Tasman.
The format was something a little different with a pairs Pinehurst format. This involved both players teeing off, playing each others ball for the second shot, then selecting the best ball after two shots to play alternative from there.
The day was a little breezy but any showers hanging around the hills stayed away. There was plenty of chat around what sort of pairing would work best and what a good score would be. Plenty of players would have seen new parts of the course and played shots that weren’t the norm for them.
A total of pairs played for a prize table of over $6000 which paid out right down to 14th place. In total 15 places were paid out as the last place pairing of Brian Hogg and Scott May with a nett 73 on countback got the “pull your socks up” prize of a pair of socks.
The winners of the day were Carl Gibson and George Daly who had a very impressive nett 57 off their 14 handicap. In second place it was Bryce Currie and Carl Snelgrove who had 60. Ron Fyfe and Jenny Norton were one shot further back with 61.
Special thanks goes to Shane and his team at Spark Business Hub for coming on board very late. Shane has all but committed to sponsoring again next year.
To Greg, Connor & Dick who continue to present the course in amazing condition, the catering staff for the platters, and lastly Tony for coming up with this new format.
