To win the prestigious Player of the Year award at Nelson Golf, participants must compete and accumulate points across five major competitions throughout the year. These competitions provide the opportunity to earn points towards the coveted trophy.

- Club Championship (in all divisions)
- Encounter Shield
- Captains Trophy
- Staig Trophy
- Shootout (throughout the year and the final shoot out)
Points can also be earned in the Plate divisions of the match play competitions: Club Championship, Staig Trophy and Captains Trophy
