Planned Itinerary for 2018 TSB Nelson Festival of Golf
(Please note, these plans may change without notice if circumstances outside our control deem it necessary)
Sunday 29th April:
Registration day at Nelson Golf Club.
Between 12noon and 3pm
- we welcome participants along to register for the tournament
- sign up for the 2’s competition throughout the week
- ask any questions of the committee
- pick up your goody bags and generally meet old friends in the comfort of the clubhouse. The café will be open so you can chat over a coffee or have a nice lunch whilst enjoying the views over the course.
As in previous years, Nelson Golf Club offer you courtesy of the course to go out and play 9 or 18 holes to get a feel for the course, especially useful if you’re a newcomer to the tournament. Please call in to the pro shop to arrange this.
Monday 30th April at Nelson Golf Club
From approximately 8.30am we plan to have a BBQ on the go by the putting green so you can have a hot filled roll and a warm cuppa available to set you up for the day. There will be a shotgun start at 9.45am – which is slightly later than last year. The competition of the day will be an Ambrose format, as it keeps everybody involved and allows you to ignore the odd bad shot on your first day of competition. It will be a good fun day and a great start to our week.
Today, we have the qualifying for the Long Putt competition. Over the last few years this has proved to be a great success and everyone has one putt to see if they can qualify for Friday’s Final Putt Off. Don’t miss your chance! There will be a daily prize giving event after play in the clubhouse.
Tuesday 1st May at Greenacres Golf Club:
First day of the individual tournament, with a shotgun start at 9.45am. There will be handicap divisions in both male and female groups. There will be a daily prize giving event after play in the clubhouse. For returning competitors, you will notice we have swapped the playing days for the Greenacres and Motueka courses. This has been done to fit in with a request from the local lady members, and the clubs have been very supportive, so thanks go to both clubs.
Wednesday 2nd May:
This is your rest day to explore all that our region has to offer.
Thursday 3rd May at Motueka Golf Club:
Second day of the individual tournament, with a shotgun start at 9.45am. You will be staying in the same divisions as you started, even if the day falls on a day when handicaps have changed. There will be a daily prize giving after play in the clubhouse.
Friday 4th May at Nelson Golf Club:
The third and final round of the individual competition, so it’s all to play for today! Today’s shotgun start will be at 9.15am – so make sure you’re not late! The reason for this earlier start time is to allow the caterers time to get the room ready for the evening dinner after we have our daily prize giving for the day’s round. We will also be holding the final of our Long Putt competition at the end of play today when everyone not taking part can stand on the balcony and watch/cheer/heckle as the lucky qualifiers do battle on the 18th green!
This evening we will hold our Tournament Dinner and Grand Prize-Giving at Nelson Golf Clubhouse. Timings are approximate at this stage but we plan for arrival around 6pm for a 6.30pm dinner.
If you have any questions regarding the itinerary, or the tournament in general, please contact me directly at [email protected] and I shall endeavor to get back to you with an answer to your query as soon as possible.
We very much look forward to seeing our returning competitors and also meeting all the new ones for what will be a fantastic week here in the beautiful Nelson Tasman region.
TSB Nelson Festival of Golf - The Courses
Nelson Golf Club
Day 1 & Day 4: Nelson Golf Club
Nelson Golf Links has played host to two major championships in the New Zealand amateur golfing calendar recently, namely the 2014 NZ Amateur Championship and the 2015 NZ Seniors Championship.
Entrants from both events were extremely complimentary about the course layout and condition, with particular mention of the world class greens.
In late August the club hosted the 2016 New Zealand Age Group Championships further enhancing Nelson’s reputation as a top golf course.
Greenacres Golf Club
Day 2: Greenacres Golf Club
Greenacres Golf Course enjoys stunning scenery from almost every part of the course. The Best Island golf course features a great layout that will test your golfing skills to the full. Players at the recent Waimea Championships, which was held at the club, were full of praise on the condition of the course.
Motueka Golf Club
Day 3: Motueka Golf Club
Motueka Golf Course is a wonderful tree lined parkland course which recently hosted Sir Bob Charles for a round of golf.
He left calling it one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. Praise indeed from a Kiwi golfing legend.
TSB Nelson Festival of Golf- The Competitions
We will be continuing the formula that has worked so well over the last three events. This will involve a team day and three individual days of golf.
Please be assured that we wish to keep the fun element to our tournament and any decision we make will be done on that basis. We want you all enjoy yourselves while you are here in Nelson, and go away very happy.
The great thing about a shotgun start, is the terrific atmosphere in the clubhouses after the golf. Our event is known as “the friendly tournament” and it is our aim to make sure everyone enjoys their week and goes away with great memories and new friends, and maybe a few new jokes !!
There will be a Team Competition on the Monday. This is the only team competition of the week, and this time round it will be an Ambrose format, making it great fun for everyone.
Teams of 4 will play together for team prizes, teams can be all men, all women or mixed. No worries if you don’t have a team of 4, we will make sure everyone is included in a team, just let us know on your entry form if you require help with that.
There will be a daily individual Stableford competition on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, we will have handicap divisions based on the numbers of men and women entering the tournament.
There will also be a cumulative weekly individual Stableford competition, split into the same divisions from the Tuesday, Thursday and Friday scores. With players split into divisions everyone will be in with a chance to win a prize.
All golfers are aware that things don’t always go right on the course and good scores are very difficult to achieve on a regular basis. We understand that, so every day of the tournament we have a selection of “Lucky Draws” which gives everyone in the clubhouse at that time, the chance to win a prize. Usually it’s a voucher for a local restaurant or activity, and it means just for being here you could still be a winner !
$245 to include 4 rounds of competition golf, 1 round of practice golf, prize giving dinner, plus a golf gift on registration.
Entry is restricted to members of golf clubs and the maximum handicaps are 30 for men and 36 for ladies.
At the Prize Giving Dinner, non playing partners are very welcome, just tick the box on the entry form and pay the amount due.
Around the Festival
Through the week, golf lessons run by our club professionals will be available before or after the competition so that players can work on different aspects of their game.

2017 Tournament Report
124 players from 49 golf clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia enjoyed wonderful weather and playing conditions during this year’s tournament.
The Nelson region is renowned for its fabulous sunshine hours, and we did not disappoint the visitors. Not only did we have sunshine every day, but snow-capped mountains mornings too.
Many of the visitors were here for the first time, and I think it’s safe to say that they were impressed with what we had to offer them in the way of great golf courses and weather.
The tournament committee of Derek & Jeane Drysdale, Euan Milne, Sue Schofield and Allison O’Donnell were thrilled to have a full entry list two months ahead of the event, a terrific compliment to everyone involved. The committee would like to thank everyone who played in the event this year and trust that they will be spreading the word to all their club members on their return to their home courses.
As in previous years, the tournament generated a terrific atmosphere. Everyone was having a fun time, no matter whether their golf was good, bad or indifferent. The clubhouses were full to brimming after each day’s play and the sound of laughter could be heard from a distance. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, is somewhat known for his sense of humour – keeping everyone in jovial mood with his wealth of funny stories!
All three golf clubs involved played their part, as all the courses were presented to a very high standard. The organizing committee received many compliments on the wonderful state of the courses, so all three green keeping teams should be congratulated for their fine efforts.
Thanks also go to Motueka Club President, Peter Johnston and his wife Shona for all their help with the day at their course. Likewise, thanks go to Manager Stuart Anderson and club member, Elaine Allan for arranging all the volunteers at Greenacres Golf Club.
Having that number of people in each clubhouse after play is a daunting task, and the tournament committee would like to extend their thanks to all the catering staff at each golf club, who kept everyone fed and watered to a very high standard. We had a daily prize giving for all four divisions (2 ladies and 2 men’s) with top 4 places in each division collecting a prize.
The Friday evening gala prize giving saw 150 people attend, as we had some non-playing partners and tournament sponsors along as well. Nelson Club caterers, Sophia & Jamie Morris along with their staff presented the gathered audience with a delicious meal before we went on to the major prize giving event.
The evening’s prize giving saw major sponsor TSB Bank, represented by their local manager, Brent Williams, giving out the prizes to the winners. The overall champion golfer for the week was, Greg Ryan from Takaka Golf Club in Golden Bay. Greg had been struggling with his golf in the run up to the tournament, so he signed up for a series of lessons with Nelson professional, Glyn Delany. Glyn’s work obviously paid off as Greg won by a good margin.
The mood throughout the Tournament was particularly buoyant this year proving yet again that the TSB Festival of Golf truly deserves its reputation as New Zealand’s “friendly” tournament.
As with any golf tournament, we could not do what we do without the tremendous support from our sponsors, so please make note of these generous companies, and use their services and products whenever you can.
